Position
One (1) Early-stage Researcher – PhD Student in Chemical and/or Mineral Resources Engineering.
Research Project
The position is offered within the EU-funded research project entitled “Twinning to Sustainable Energy Transition”, Acronym: TWINN2SET, Grant Agreement No. 101079246.
Position Description

The position is a full-time PhD student position funded by the European Commission under the Twinning programme (HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ACCESS-03).

The TWINN2SET project consists of a capacity-building and mentoring programme in the fields of:

  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
  • Deep Geothermal Energy
  • Subsurface Hydrogen Storage

The programme is complemented by an exploratory research project focusing on hydrogen storage in geological formations. The research combines hydrogen technologies with subsurface reservoir characterisation, modelling and monitoring.

Main Research Activities

The PhD student will contribute to the development of innovative and efficient technologies for hydrogen and CO2 storage in geological formations.

  • Determination of the spatial distribution of porosity and permeability.
  • Investigation of changes in the petrophysical properties of reservoir rocks.
  • Evaluation of gas migration through porous media, including salt caverns.
  • Participation in rock and fluid laboratory experiments, testing and analysis.
  • Assistance in the development of an advanced High-Temperature and High-Pressure (HTHP) laboratory facility.
Required Qualifications
  • MSc degree in Mineral Resources Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • Laboratory experience in high-pressure and high-temperature thermodynamic and core-flooding experiments.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Two potential referees.
  • Candidates should have secured a PhD position at a Greek university.
About the Position
The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team of scientists with expertise in engineering, geology, chemistry and biology. The researcher will participate in technology-transfer events and workshops and contribute to scientific dissemination, project activities, grant applications and the preparation of research publications.
